Why is it important to apply for a VOG for staff in financial services?
Article 13 of the Prudential Rules Decree prescribes that a financial organisation should make a well-founded assessment of the reliability of persons it intends to appoint to integrity-sensitive positions. As an employer, you, therefore, have a great responsibility in assessing the reliability of (potential) staff.
Potential risks within the financial sector
Financial service providers handle confidential information and financial resources. Accessing customers’ sensitive information and understanding their financial data poses a risk. Namely misuse of this data, such as extortion, blackmail, forgery, fraud, theft, and embezzlement. In addition, there is a danger of bribery and money laundering in this sector. In short, when employees act untrustworthy or insincere, it can have severe consequences for you as an employer.
What is a VOG?
A VOG is one of the means that an organisation can use to test integrity. The certificate is a declaration that shows that a candidate’s past (including judicial) record does not constitute an obstacle to fulfilling a specific task or position in society. In assessing an application for a VOG, Justis examines whether the candidate has any criminal offences to his or her name that pose a risk to the position or purpose for which he or she is applying for the VOG.
There is a list of set screening profiles that Justis will screen candidates for, depending on their profession. For example, if you are working in the financial sector, the VOG screening profile you will need is number 95.
