Mandatory criminal record checks for the recruitment of teachers

Before recruitment and employment of teachers, or other jobs involving children and young people, requires a criminal record check from the police. The requirement for a criminal record check is laid down in the Swedish Education Act or the Act on criminal register checks on persons working with children. The checks include previous convictions involving drugs, crimes and violence against children, sexual abuse or molestation, murder or child pornography offences. The aim is to prevent the risk of child abuse. As stated earlier, sometimes a check of the criminal record is not enough.
