5 Employment screening trends in 2024

Research by ResumeLab (2022) found that the number of lies on CVs is increasing. For example, about 18% do not tell the truth about their skills, 27% do not tell the truth about their work experience and 17% do not tell the truth about the work they have done with previous jobs.

It is logical that there will be even more focus on employment screening in 2024.

In this article, we highlight the most important trends for 2024 and we will tell you how your company can benefit from them.

Ongoing trends of 2023

There are two major trends that were already there in 2023, but will continue to play a major role in 2024:

  • Labour market scarcity in 2024:
    • The expectation for this year is that labour market scarcity will continue. This tightness stops many companies from growing. It remains important to invest in employee retention. Applying employment screening gives you visibility into the integrity of your employees.
  • Hybrid working remains an established part of today’s employment landscape
    • Trusting your employees is the starting point for hybrid working. Employment screening allows your organisation to monitor integrity and quality.

1. Internationalisation

Many companies operate on an international scale and have employees all over the world. Foreign candidates are hired to reduce staff shortages, among other things. Screening employees internationally helps ensure their integrity and reduces related risks.

International laws and regulations are another reason driving this growth. Companies working internationally need to ensure that their employment screening processes comply with the laws and regulations of the country in which they operate. Validata unburdens them of this.

2. Increase in in-employment screenings

At Validata, we see a large increase in the number of in-employment screenings carried out over the past year. In 2022, this type of screening took up 3.8% of the total; in 2023, as much as 12.8% at Validata. Apart from increasing compliance requirements, it may also be due to the tight labour market; employers are more dependent on the people they have, and screening is also increasingly taking place during internal transfers.

Another cause of the increase may be that news articles regularly pass by about events that prove that in-employment screening is very important. For example, NU.nl in the Netherlands reports that the entire FVD faction was suspended last November because several members of the Parliament had not reported their secondary functions and activities.

3. Screening external employees

Another trend that we see is that organisations are increasingly hiring external employees. It is also important to exclude unnecessary risks with external employees. Actually, the same risks and reasons to screen your (external) employees apply to this group.

We received a lot of questions from our customers about screening their external employees. They wanted to know if that’s possible with Validata and it is.

4. Digitalisation

Internally, we are constantly innovating and making technological advances. Digitalisation remains hot topic. For instance, it is a priority for us to automate as many processes as possible. This way, both candidates and our support employees spend less time on manual tasks. With the increase in the number of screenings, it is vital that the process is automated more and more, so that efficiency can also continue to increase and Validata can scale up its services more easily.

The mobile accessibility of our Valluga screening platform has been greatly improved over the past year. Employers and candidates can more easily follow the progress of the screening and view it at any time. It is also possible to complete the entire screening via mobile.

In 2023, Validata launched the PID check to complement the ID check. This allows us to check person identification in addition to identity document verification. This digital face recognition takes place directly through the mobile in combination with the verification of the identity document. By using biometric authentication, the risk of identity fraud is minimised.

5. Cybersecurity and data privacy

Even in 2024, cybersecurity and data privacy remain crucial in the employment screening world. Every year, the threat of cyber attacks grows explosively, according to RTL Nieuws.

At Validata, we take this threat very seriously and invest in strong cybersecurity and data privacy protection. For example, our employees are getting trained in how to recognise phishing mails, what to do in different situations and how to handle confidential information as securely as possible.

This way, we create awareness and develop skills that reduce the risk of a cyber-attack.
